Musa Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre goes on tour to Europe

The foreign audience will be shown The Pearl Fishers based on Georges Bizet’s music.

(Kazan, 13 October, Tatar-inform). Musa Jalil Tatar Opera and Ballet Theatre will go on tour to the Netherlands on 14 October to 22 November. Within the tour, the audience will be shown Georges Bizet’s opera The Pearl Fishers, produced by stage director Vernon Mound and conductor Marco Boemi. Over the autumn tour, the performance will be presented 33 times in Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Gouda, Haarlem, Amsterdam and other cities.

The company engaged in the tour includes theatre’s lead singers Yuri Ivshin and Aidar Nugayanov, as well as guest singers Sasanna Chakhoyan (Ukraine), Tatiana Fedotova (Moscow), Alfia Karimova (Kazakhstan), and others.

The Pearl Fishers’ world premiere took place in September 1863 in Paris’ Theatre-Lyrique. The opera was no success during the composer’s life, just as his other masterpiece Carmen. The Pearl Fishers is rather rarely found in Russian opera theatres’ repertoires.

In Kazan, the performance was first staged in 1903. One hundred years later, the British stage director Vernon Mound and design artists Paul Edwards and Emma Rayet re-produced the show. Interestingly, the dances in Bizet’s ‘exotic’ opera set in Ceylon are staged by the Indian choreographer Shamita Rej. The opera is performed in the French language.
