Albina Shagimuratova to perform at Houston Grand Opera season opening

The Houston Grand Opera will tonight celebrate the opening of its new season. Participants in the concert will be the HGO musical director Patrick Summers, American opera legend Frederica von Stade (mezzo soprano), international competition winner and People’s Artist of Tatarstan Albina Shagimuratova, as well as the theatre’s choir and orchestra. The presentation will take place in the Wortham Theater Center.

Houston Grand Opera is a native theatre for Shagimuratova. In 2006-2008, the singer took training at the Young Vocalists Training Center. In Houston she performed the part of Violetta in Traviata, Lucia in Lucia de Lammermoor, Queen of the Night in Magic Flute, Musetta in Bohemia and Gilda in Rigoletto.

Performing on the world’s best stages, Shagimuratova is tonight coming back to Houston Grand Opera as a guest star, the Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre’s press service has said. In the season’s inaugural concert, the singer will perform a most complex part of Constanza from the rarely staged in Russia opera by Mozart, The Abduction from the Seraglio, as well as the famous Barcarolle from J. Offenbach’s opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in duet with Frederica von Stade.

“My tour schedule in September is very tight,” Shagimuratova shared. “On 16 September I sing Gilda in San-Francisco Opera, on 17 September I perform at a concert in Houston and as soon as on 19 September I have one more show in San-Francisco. But I was unable to reject my favourite HGO. The training with the theatre gave me a lot professionally. I met great teachers and musicians here, I was lucky to work with maestro Patrick Summers. This opera house is special for me.”

HGO was founded in 1955, has staged 43 global opera premieres and so far been the only opera company in the world to win three prestigious awards, two Grammies, two Emmies and a Tony.
