Vasilev’s Anyuta Comes to Kazan

On 28 June, Kazan theatregoers were treated to a dashing performance of “Anyuta,” a dramatic ballet in an original production choreographed by Vladimir Vasilev. Acclaimed choreographer Vasilev himself was present at the performance, the last of a weeklong run at the Musa Jalil Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Written by Aleksandr Belinski and Vladimir Vasilev, the libretto of “Anyuta” is based on a 1895 story by Anton Chekhov. Anyuta is a girl from a poor family who lives with her father and two younger brothers. Her mother died when she was young. Anyuta marries Modest Alekseevich, a man she doesn’t love but who is better off than her family. As it turns out, however, the entire dilemma was a phantasmagoria that she herself had thought up, meaning she has one final chance, at a ball, to marry out of poverty forever.

The main roles in the performance on 28 June were danced by Aleksandra Surodeva (Anna), Dmitri Stroitelev (Peter Leontevich, her father), and Ruslan Savdenov (Modest Alekseevich, an old employee). They all performed beautifully. The impressive musical arrangement by Valery Gavrilini transported us back to a magical time that captivated the audience for more than two hours. The audience showed its appreciation at the final curtain with a standing ovation, and Vasilev came on stage to thank everyone involved in making the performance a success.
