Vladimir Vasiliev: “The Tatar Opera and Ballet Theatre is our national wealth”

The People’s Artist of the USSR and Russia Vladimir Vasiliev has come to Kazan, to see the Anyuta ballet’s premiere.

(Kazan, June 28, Tatar-inform, Lucia Kamalova). The outstanding dancer and choreographer and People’s Artist of the USSR and Russia Vladimir Vasiliev has come to Kazan, to watch the Anyuta ballet’s premiere at the Tatar Opera and Ballet Theatre. Before the show, the 20th century greatest dancer answered questions from journalists.

Anyuta was first staged at the Tatar theatre in 1988, with the music by composer Valery Gavrilin and choreography by Vladimir Vasiliev. The first production was a success but when the costumes and scenery wore out, the show was temporarily excluded from the repertoire. After numerous calls from viewers asking when Anyuta would be re-introduced, the show was given second wind.

“The ballet Anyuta has stood the test of time. It is just a remarkable, brilliant performance,” the Tatar Opera Theatre’s artistic director Vladimir Yakovlev said, opening the news conference.

Vladimir Vasiliev confessed Chekhov was his favourite writer. “When I first staged Anyuta, it was the first show based on Chekhov. What matters most here is music. Until I will fall in love with the music, I will never get down to work. When I first heard the Gavrilin’s music, I realised it was simple, it was right there,” the famous choreographer shared.

To journalists surprise, they were shown a video with Vladimir Vasiliev’s impressionist water colours and oil paintings. “Painting these days takes a much greater place in my life than does ballet,” Vladimir Vasiliev confessed. He did not rule out the possibility of opening an exhibition of his works in Kazan.

He said he watched all the festivals the Tatar Opera and Ballet Theatre hosted. “Your theatre and the city are a feast for the eye, they can be proud of. Your theatre is our national asset,” he enhanced. Vasiliev went on to say he had been extremely surprised to have learnt how small were the salaries at the theatre. “Everything is owing to the talent of the people who work in this theatre. If they leave, this wealth could be lost,” he stressed.

After the press conference, the visitors went on to watch this season’s last premiere, Anyuta, which has already been acclaimed by critics and viewers.
