In 1984 she graduated from Perm Ballet School and joined the Tatar Musa Jalil Academic State Theatre of Opera and Ballet. In 1987 she made her debut in a lead role - Syuyumbike in the ballet Shuraleh (mus. F. Yarullin, chor. Leonid Jacobson) and soon became one of the Theatre’s leading soloists. Her repertoire includes the following, among other, roles: Masha (Nutcracker), Title role (Giselle), Title Role (La Sylphide), Title Role (Anyuta), Nikia, Gamzatti (La Bayadère), Kitri (Don Quixote), Title Role (Snow White), Title Role (Carmen), Title Role (Romeo and Juliet), Sheherazade, Nurida (A Thousand and One Nights), The Green Girl (Peer Gynt), Gulnara, Medora (Le Corsaire), Zuleikha (A Tale about Yusuf).

She appeared numerous times in the Rudolf Nureyev International Festivals of Classical ballet. She often toured as a member of the Theatre Company in Europe.

At the end of her career as dancer, Elena Kostrova was invited to remain with the Theatre in the capacity of teacher-répétiteur.
